While the COVID-19 pandemic is still very much affecting Gainesville’s classrooms and communities, a desired sense of normalcy has become very difficult to find. If only after the third week of school being in session you are feeling stressed or anxious, you are not alone. Stress management and mental health has become a hot topic amidst the global crisis; however, it is important as students to form a supportive network among each other and share healthy coping methods. The shift to online classrooms and virtual involvement opportunities is being discussed and questioned by students across all universities. Many complain that staring at a screen for longer than normal has caused strain on the eyes. In addition to this, students feel a decline in their physical activity as they no longer are required to walk from one building to another across campus, but rather only a few steps from their beds to a kitchen table. So, what are the best methods to combating these concerns?
The formation of new healthy habits that will provide both temporary and long term mental and physical relief.
Functional medicine is being used now more than ever. Within health and wellness, stress management is part of the discipline's top priorities. Below are three common concerns and strategies for college students to help combat stress and anxiety.
Too Much Screen Time?
Take a walk, stretch, or try deep breathing exercises in between classes
Find a new hobby that replaces excess time spent on technology, video games, or social media after online classes or meetings.
Scared of getting sick?
Wear a face mask inside public spaces, or outside when less than six feet apart from others
Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Sing the chorus from your favorite song to make the time pass!
Follow a balanced diet incorporating immune system boosting foods (Spinach, citrus fruits, and berries)
Regularly exercise (variety in routine is key!)
How can I form and keep my social relationships while in online classes and clubs?
Be confident. Be your authentic self when interacting with others online.
Arrange plans to socially distance outside with friends and classmates after class or over the weekend
Find involvement opportunities and make connections with others with similar interests
The next FSFM meeting will take place on Zoom next Tuesday, September 22nd at 6:15pm. Guest speaker Dr. Joseph McNamara from the UF College of Medicine will be joining us to continue our conversation on sleep and anxiety. We hope you will join us!
