The previous week was both insightful with exciting for the members of Florida Students for Functional Medicine, as the organization hosted its second general body meeting and a virtual service opportunity.

Nurse Practitioner, Kelly Teixeira, joined our club members on Zoom last Tuesday evening and spoke on her profession within the realm of functional and holistic medicine. Specifically, she spoke to us on autoimmune promoting behaviors with an emphasis on nutrition, hormone balance, genetic factors, and environmental detoxes. A highlight of her presentation was a discussion on body toxins that can be acquired from roundup and metals such mercury, aluminum, and nickel. Some of Ms. Teixeira's suggestions to avoid these damaging body toxins that are practical for many students included using cooking utensils and deodorants without aluminum, avoiding the consumption of fish, red teas, hydrogenated oils, processed foods, and non-organic foods. A source that Ms. Teixeira recommended for more information is linked below :

This year, the Alzheimers Association held a walk and fundraiser to benefit Alzheimer's treatments, research and spread awareness. On Saturday, our club followed the hashtag #Alzheimerswalk on social media, as many partook in a walk both in and outside of Gainesville. Despite the experience being different than in years past, our first service opportunity was still a great success. The link below offers more information on how to donate and get involved with the Alzheimers Association:
